FAQ

  • What is the time commitment like?
During the fall semester, we usually have two practices a week and games (1-2) on the weekend. Our league play begins very soon after classes start and usually runs until mid-October. If we qualify for the post-season tournament, league/tourney play would continue later in the semester. During the winter months, we play in RPI's indoor soccer intramural league as a way to keep skills up, stay in shape, and stay connected as a team. We practice when we can, but indoor space can be limited. In the spring, we practice about once a week and aim to schedule a couple friendly scrimmages with other teams. We also join RPI's outdoor soccer intramural league. In the past, we have also attended a tournament or two and try to so when it aligns well with RPI's academic calendar. See our about us page for more information and our comparison between intramural, club, and varsity to see if club is the right choice for you!
  • Can I play another sport or be in another club?
All of the players on our team do something else besides club soccer! Many of them do another club(s) or even a varsity sport (although they usually pick sports whose seasons are in the spring). Our members are involved in things all around campus including Greek Life, professional clubs, service organizations, music and art based clubs, and so much more! Note that a player in unable to play on both the varsity soccer team and the club soccer team at the same time (see that FAQ for more information).
  • Does it cost anything to be part of club soccer?
Dues for RPI WCS are about $30 per year. Additionally, we ask each member to buy a warm-up shirt (one time purchase) and provide their own black socks and black shorts. Jerseys are provided, but must be returned at the end of the season. If this cost is too much for a player we can work with you to make sure you can still fully participate!
  • How do I join?
We hold tryouts at the beginning of both the fall and spring semesters. See our tryouts FAQ category for more information
  • Can you play both varsity soccer and club soccer?
A player cannot be on both the club soccer team and varsity soccer team at the same time, due to NCAA and NIRSA rules. However, we have had players who've previously played on the varsity team join our team and some of our players have joined the varsity team. Players must meet NIRSA eligibility reqiurements to play on the club team.
  • Who is your coach?
We currently don't have a coach, but are looking for one (feel free to reach out if you would like to be considered for the position!). Currently, all practices and leaderships at games (including substitutions) are run by 2-3 team captains. Captains are selected by all team members at the beginning of each semester.
  • I have a question that's not answered here. What should I do?
Reach out to us, we're happy to help! You can email us at rpiwomensclubsoccer@gmail.com or DM us on our socials: Instagram or Facebook.
  • When are tryouts?
We hold tryouts at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Watch our socials for specific dates, times, and locations.
  • What are tryouts like?
Each player will be given a number for tryouts after providing basic information (so we can contact you!). We'll also take your picture with your number, so we can remember who you are! Tryouts usually last two days and all potential players are taken through a series of foot skill, passing, and team based drills to assess their overall soccer skills, teamwork, and positive attitude. We do not prioritize upperclassmen over underclassmen and returners are not guaranteed a spot on the team. Every person has an equal chance of making the team at tryouts.
  • What should I bring to tryouts?
Cleats/turf shoes, shin guards, water, and a great attitude! For spring tryouts or in case of inclement weather, we will likely be inside, so be sure to bring sneakers or shoes appropriate for the gym floor.
  • What skill level are you looking for?
Our players generally have previously played at a fairly competitive level (ex: HS varsity, travel, etc.). Experience is not strictly required, but it is generally recommended.
  • What positions are you looking for?
All of them! All players must try out every year and returners are not prioritized over new comers. See 'What are tryouts like?' for more information.
  • How many people are normally on the team?
    About 25 players.
  • Can freshmen make the team? What about grad students? Other years?
Of course! Making the team is completely based on the skills you show us at tryouts and not on what year you are. All undergraduates and graduates are welcome to try out for the team. Players must meet NIRSA eligibility requirements, but this is generally not an issue.
  • Do you play in a league?
Yes! Our main season is the fall semester, during which we compete in NIRSA - Region 1, playing club teams from other schools.
  • Who do you play?
We play in the NIRSA Region 1 league in the fall. The league includes other club teams such as University at Albany, Cornell University, SUNY Oneonta, Siena College, and more. In the spring, we are open to scrimmage anyone who wants to play!
  • How far do you travel?
The farthest we usually travel is around 3.5 hours away. We usually only travel for 2-3 "far away" games a year with the others being home or less than a half hour away.
  • How do you get to away games?
We all pack into a couple of mini vans rented via our club's budget through the RPI Union and drive to the game. These road trips are so much fun and we really get to know each other as a team. Plus we usually stop for a team dinner on the way home! For those concerned about safety, drivers are trained through an RPI course, must be 21+, and are required to have a valid license.
  • When are games?
Games are usually Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Ocassionally, we may play a local team on a weeknight, but this is a once per season (or less) occurence.
  • When are practices?
We practice weekday evenings, but the specific days and times vary each year due to field availablity. A practice schedule will be distributed to members of the team after tryouts. If you are worried about a class interfering with practice, class comes first!
  • Do I have to attend every practice?
While we encourage players to attend every practice, we understand that things may come up and classes come first. Players are allowed to miss practice provided they have a valid excuse (as deemed by our attendance policy) and they notify the officers of this by the deadline outlined in the attendance policy for that type of event (practice, game, special event). Additionally, players are given three "personal excuses" per semester to miss practice for any reason, no questions asked. Note, that failure to provide notification that you are missing practice results in the use of a personal excuse. If a player misses a practice without a valid excuse/failure to notify after using all personal excuses, a meeting with club leadership is required and disciplinary action may be taken. NOTE that the attendance policy and personal excuse system is subject to change
  • What if I have a test or class during practice or a game?
School always comes first! We do have an attendance policy but you will not be penalized for missing an event for a class or test as long as you let the officers know ahead of time.
  • Where do you practice?
We usually practice on Lower Renwyck Turf or Harkness Field (also turf), which are located in RPI's East Campus Athletic Village (ECAV). These are also our home fields for games! Ocassionally, we may practice on grass, but this is rare for us. In the winter, we practice in the Amory or the '87 Gym, when space is available.
  • Where should I park?
See our parking map here! Note that these lots may be subject to RPI's parking permit restrictions. However, after 5 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends, permits are not required.
  • Do I have to buy a uniform?
We provide jerseys that must be returned at the end of each season. We ask that players provide their own black socks and black shorts. Additionally, we ask that players purchase a warm up shirt during their first season to be worn while warming up. If you are facing financial difficulties, reach out to us and we will try to make it work!
  • Do I get to pick my jersey number?
We have a set of jerseys that players can choose from. Higher class years chose first, with freshmen choosing last.
  • Where can I get club soccer apparel?
The teams runs an order in the fall and spring, so watch our social media for news on when you can order!
  • Can anyone order club soccer apparel?
Yes! Anyone is allowed to order and wear club soccer apparel. However, some items may be restricted to players only. Watch our social media for information on when we do apparel orders.
